Why Do Many Hate Real Estate Agents?

Selling our first house was a nightmare. We found the agent at church. She was delighted to take our listing. Fast forward and six weeks later, someone else in her office called to say we only had a few hours left to decide on an offer. What offer? The one that had been sitting around most of two days. Our agent went out of town and left things to a colleague – but never told us. It got worse – the buyer seemed to know everything we told our agent we were willing to fix, but only if the buyer requested. As we struggled with the offer, the agent told us how lucky we were to get such a good offer for our dump (in so many words).

Before becoming an agent myself, I was part of several other buying and selling transactions. Most were good, but now that I’ve been on the other side of dozens of transactions, I’ve seen the work of many agents. When I came across a list of issues compiled from surveys and research, it reminded me why we took the name Diligent Homes – we’re on a quest so you never experience a nightmare like our first sale.

The 12 issues on the survey fall into three categories:

  • Lack of Communication - Many clients feel frustrated when agents don't keep them updated or fail to respond on time.

  • Ignoring Client Interests - Clients may feel that their needs and preferences are not being prioritized. Clients sometimes feel that agents are more focused on their commission than on the client's best interests. Some agents can be overly aggressive in their sales tactics, making clients uncomfortable. Clients may also feel that agents are not being fully honest or transparent about the process.

  • Low Effort - From accurate valuations to organized plans to the many hours in preparation and research, the job requires diligence. Low market knowledge, low effort, or low-quality marketing materials can make a property less appealing.
